How the induction vs. gas cost comparison works

Gas ranges consume roughly 9,000 BTU per hour of active cooking (a weighted average across burner sizes and typical usage patterns), of which about 40% actually heats the food - the rest heats the kitchen. Induction transfers about 85% of electrical input directly to the cookware. The calculator uses these efficiencies to estimate how much energy each option uses to deliver the same amount of cooking heat, then prices that energy at your local gas and electricity rates.

The payback math compares the net upfront cost (induction range + any electrical work − the gas range you'd otherwise have bought − rebates) against the annual operating savings (or extra cost, if gas is cheap relative to electricity in your area). In many US markets gas cooking is still cheaper per BTU delivered, so the annual cost delta is small - sometimes negative - and payback is driven almost entirely by the upfront cost gap after rebates.

The indoor air quality case

Energy cost payback is only part of the picture. Gas combustion produces nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and fine particulates (PM2.5) indoors. Inputs that move the answer the most

  • Gas price vs. electricity rate. In regions with cheap gas and expensive electricity (most of the US interior), induction costs more to operate. In regions with cheap hydro electricity (Pacific Northwest, Quebec), induction can be cheaper.
  • Electrical work cost. If your kitchen lacks a 240V outlet, a $300–$600 circuit installation adds meaningfully to net upfront cost. If the circuit already exists, this is zero.
